What counts as a DTL spare?
Four things wear out or run out on a direct-lung setup:
- Sub-ohm coils: drop-in mesh coil heads below 1.0Ω — think VOOPOO PNP, Vaporesso GTX, Smok RPM. These are the consumable heart of a DL tank or pod-mod.
- Replacement cartridges: larger-capacity pods for restricted-DTL devices such as the OXVA VPrime, replaced as a unit.
- Rebuildable coils: pre-wrapped alien and Clapton coils for RTA and RDA users who build their own decks.
- Cotton: premium wicking cotton for rebuilders — the cheapest way to refresh flavour on an RTA.
How to choose the right sub-ohm coil
Match three things: device, resistance and wattage. Coils are platform-specific, so buy the family your tank uses (PNP for VOOPOO, GTX for Vaporesso, RPM for Smok). Then pick resistance for the vape you want: 0.4Ω–0.6Ω suits a warm restricted-DL draw at 25–45W, while 0.15Ω–0.3Ω runs hotter at 45W+ for maximum vapour. Finally, stay inside the wattage range printed on the coil — pushing past it is the fastest way to a burnt wick. Sub-ohm coils typically give one to two weeks. Stretch that by priming properly (saturate the cotton, then wait 10 minutes before firing), starting a new coil at the bottom of its wattage range for the first few tanks, and avoiding very dark, heavily sweetened juice, which caramelises on mesh. Rebuilders can go further: dry-burn the coil, re-wick with fresh cotton, and a R139 set of aliens lasts months.
FAQ
How often should I replace a sub-ohm coil?
Every one to two weeks with daily use. Burnt or muted flavour, weaker vapour or gurgling all mean it is time. High wattages and sweet juice shorten coil life.
Can I use nic salts in a DTL coil?
Not recommended. Sub-ohm coils vaporise a lot of liquid per puff, so 25-50mg salts become harsh and overwhelming. Stick to 3-6mg freebase e-liquid for anything under 0.6 ohm.
Are coils interchangeable between brands?
No – coil families are platform-specific. A PNP coil only fits PNP-compatible VOOPOO gear, GTX fits Vaporesso GTX tanks, and RPM fits Smok RPM devices. Check your tank coil family before ordering.
