Pod Systems & Vape Kits in South Africa: Buyer’s Guide

Walk into the hardware section of any South African vape shop and four quite different things wear the same word: “kit”. A R299 pod that arrives pre-filled, a R425 refillable that takes your own e-liquid, a R649 adjustable-airflow device for flavour tinkerers, and a R1 499 dual-battery mod. They are not competing products — they suit different people, different budgets and different draws.

This guide breaks down the four families, explains the two specs that actually matter (battery and coil resistance), and shows what ADVapes has on the shelf right now with real Rand pricing. Nicotine products are for adult smokers and vapers aged 18+ only.

The four kinds of vape kit, plainly explained

1. Closed (prefilled) pod systems

A rechargeable battery plus a sealed pod that already contains e-liquid. You vape the pod, throw the pod away, click in a new one. There is no filling, no coil to change, no mess — the pod is the coil.

This is the natural next step off disposables: you keep the open-it-and-vape-it simplicity but stop binning a whole battery every few days. The trade-off is choice — you get only the flavours and strengths the brand makes for that pod.

The Bewolk X Pod Kit 12K is the clearest example in the ADVapes range — battery, sleeve and a prefilled 12,000-puff pod in one box at R299.00, in 20mg and 50mg, in flavours including Blackened Berry, Mint, Pink Zing, The Cake and the Jack Parow Tjoef editions (Cherry Sucker, Lychee Juice, Granadilla Lolly). When the pod is done, you buy a pod — not a device.

2. Refillable pod kits

The mainstream choice, and where most experienced vapers land. A battery plus a refillable pod you top up yourself with any bottled e-liquid; when the coil inside tires, you replace just the pod.

Refillables unlock the whole liquid catalogue — nic salts, freebase and DIY longfills — and they are the cheapest way to vape long-term, because bottled e-liquid costs a fraction of e-liquid sold inside a device. Our guide on pod systems vs disposables runs the numbers.

3. MTL starter kits

MTL means mouth-to-lung: you draw vapour into your mouth first, then inhale — exactly how you smoked a cigarette. MTL kits use tight airflow, higher-resistance coils and modest power. They sip liquid, they are discreet, and with nic salts they satisfy a smoker’s throat hit.

Most compact refillable pod kits are MTL kits — the categories overlap. The Airscream AirsPops Pro Lite and the Vaporesso XROS 6 Mini both sit squarely here. If the draw style is new to you, read vape airflow explained before you choose.

4. Sub-ohm DL kits

DL is direct-lung: an open, airy draw straight into the chest, like breathing through a wide straw. These are the big-battery mods with sub-ohm coils (below 1.0 ohm, usually 0.15–0.4) and refillable tanks. They produce serious vapour and serious flavour, they run at low nicotine strengths, and they drink e-liquid.

They are not a first device — they are what a comfortable ex-smoker or flavour enthusiast graduates to. At ADVapes the DL flagship is the GeekVape Aegis Legend 5 Kit at R1 499.00, IP67-rated against water, dust and knocks, which is why Aegis mods survive site work, farm bakkies and gym bags.

Battery: how much you actually need

Battery capacity is quoted in mAh, but bigger is not automatically better — it trades against pocketability.

  • Compact pod kits are small enough to forget you are carrying. Most light-to-moderate MTL vapers get a full day from one and top up over Type-C in under an hour — the XROS 6 Mini and OXVA XLIM Go 2 sit here.
  • Full-size pod kits (XROS 6, XLIM Pro 3, XLIM 3 Ultra, NeXLIM) trade a few millimetres for longer runtime — the pick if you are away from a charger or you chain-vape.
  • Dual-battery mods like the Aegis Legend 5 run all weekend, but they are heavy and they use removable cells you charge externally.

Two practical points: buy Type-C, not micro-USB (every kit here charges over Type-C); and if you forget to plug things in, size up — a slightly bigger device you never run flat beats a tiny one that dies at 3pm.

Coil resistance: the number that changes everything

The ohm rating on a pod is the single spec that determines how your vape feels. Lower resistance means more power, more vapour and faster liquid use; higher resistance means a cooler, tighter, more efficient MTL vape.

  • 1.0–1.2 ohm — tight MTL. The right choice for nic salts at 20mg and above, and for anyone switching off cigarettes. OXVA’s 1.2 XLIM and NeXLIM cartridges live here.
  • 0.8 ohm — the all-rounder. Slightly warmer and airier than 1.2, still efficient. If you are unsure, start here.
  • 0.6 ohm — restricted DL or loose MTL. Best paired with lower nicotine (roughly 6–12mg) because it delivers more vapour per puff.
  • 0.15–0.4 ohm — true sub-ohm DL, mod territory only. Use 3mg freebase liquid, never nic salts.

The golden rule: as resistance drops, nicotine strength must drop too. A 50mg nic salt through a 0.4 coil is genuinely unpleasant. Our nic salts guide covers strength matching, and the MTL coils and spares guide covers replacement timing.

Which type suits you?

The switching smoker

You want satisfaction, not clouds. Go MTL: a compact refillable pod kit with a 1.0–1.2 ohm pod and 20mg nic salts, or a closed pod system if you want zero fuss in week one. Budget R299–R450 for the device. The switcher’s guide walks through the first fortnight.

The flavour chaser

You want adjustable airflow, swappable resistances and clean flavour separation. A mid-to-upper refillable is your device — the OXVA XLIM family and the Vaporesso XROS 6 are the two ranges people argue about most, which is why we compared them in the XROS 6 vs XLIM showdown. Budget R560–R750.

Coming off disposables

Start with a closed pod system to keep the habit intact, then move to a refillable once the routine sticks. Most people jump within a month, and that is where the savings begin.

What a kit actually costs to run

The device price is the smallest part of the picture. What matters is the monthly spend afterwards.

On a refillable your recurring costs are pods and liquid. A four-pack of Vaporesso XROS Replacement Pods 0.6 Mesh 3ml is R269.00 — roughly R67 a pod, and a pod typically lasts a couple of weeks. OXVA cartridges are similar: XLIM Top Fill 3ml 3-packs at R249.00 in 0.6 and 0.8, the 1.2 DNA Anti-Burn 3-pack at R219.00 and NeXLIM 4ml 3-packs at R219.00. Call it R100–R150 a month on pods.

Liquid is where refillables win outright. Premixed bottles are convenient; mixing your own longfills is cheaper still. Our vape additives and flavour shots guide and the 30ml longfill guide show how the shot-and-nic system works.

On a closed pod system, the pod is the whole recurring cost — simple to budget, but you pay for the coil and the liquid together every time.

A short buying checklist

  1. Pick your draw first. Tight MTL if you are leaving cigarettes; airy DL only if you already vape comfortably.
  2. Match resistance to strength. High ohm with high mg, low ohm with low mg — never the reverse.
  3. Check the spares are stocked. A brilliant kit with no pods on the shelf is a paperweight.
  4. Do not over-buy. Start at R299–R450 and upgrade once you know what you actually like.

What is the difference between a pod system and a vape kit?

A pod system is a device that uses a pod – a small liquid chamber that either comes prefilled or that you refill yourself – rather than a screw-on tank. A vape kit is the broader term for any device sold complete and ready to use, which includes pod systems as well as larger sub-ohm mod kits like the GeekVape Aegis Legend 5. In practice every pod system is a kit, but not every kit is a pod system.

Which vape kit is best for someone quitting smoking?

A compact MTL pod kit with a 1.0 to 1.2 ohm pod and 20mg nic salts gives the tight, cigarette-like draw and quick nicotine hit that switching smokers need. At ADVapes the Airscream AirsPops Pro Kit Lite at R299.00 and the Vaporesso XROS 6 Mini at R425.00 are both strong starting points. Avoid sub-ohm DL kits at this stage – the airy draw and low nicotine will not satisfy a smoker.

How often do I need to replace the pod or coil?

Most refillable pods last one to three weeks depending on how much you vape and what you vape. Sweet, dark or heavily sweetened liquids gunk coils faster than light fruits and menthols. Replace the pod when flavour turns dull, when you taste a burnt edge, or when the pod starts leaking. A four-pack of XROS pods at R269.00 typically covers a couple of months.

Is a refillable pod kit cheaper than buying disposables?

Yes, substantially. A refillable kit is a one-off purchase from around R299.00, after which you only buy pods and e-liquid – roughly R100 to R150 a month on pods for a typical MTL vaper, plus liquid. Disposables have no upfront saving and every device you finish is a full replacement cost. The gap widens further if you mix your own longfills rather than buying premixed bottles.

The bottom line

Buy for the draw you want, not the spec sheet. A switching smoker is best served by a tight MTL pod kit under R450 and 20mg nic salts. A settled vaper chasing flavour should spend R560–R750 on an adjustable refillable. Only go sub-ohm once you know you want big, airy, low-nicotine clouds — and you are happy to feed a device that drinks liquid. Whichever route you take, check that spare pods for your device are in stock before you commit.

Nicotine is addictive. Vaping products are intended for adult smokers and vapers aged 18 and over. Not for use by non-smokers, pregnant or breastfeeding women.
