Vape Coil Ohms Explained in South Africa: Resistance & Wattage Guide

Every vape coil has a number printed on it — 0.15Ω, 0.6Ω, 1.2Ω and so on. That number is the coil’s resistance in ohms, and it decides two things: how much power the coil wants, and what kind of draw you get. Get the ohms-to-wattage match right and the coil sings; get it wrong and you either burn the coil or barely make vapour. This ADVapes guide explains vape coil ohms for South African vapers and, crucially, how resistance and wattage work together so you can run every coil at its sweet spot.

Nicotine products are for adult smokers and vapers aged 18+ only.

What ohms actually tell you

Ohms (Ω) measure electrical resistance. In a vape coil, lower resistance = more current flows = more heat at a given power. That is why the numbers matter:

  • Higher-resistance coils (1.0Ω and above) restrict current, run cooler and at lower wattage, produce less vapour, and give a tight, cigarette-like MTL (mouth-to-lung) draw. These pair with stronger nic salts.
  • Lower-resistance coils (below 0.6Ω, “sub-ohm”) let more current through, run hot at higher wattage, produce big clouds, and give an airy DTL (direct-to-lung) draw. These suit lower-strength juice.
  • Mid-range coils (around 0.6Ω–0.8Ω) sit between the two and suit a restricted DTL or loose MTL draw — a popular all-rounder.

The ohms do not change the flavour of your juice on their own — they change how hot and how much vapour the coil makes, which is why the same liquid tastes different in a 1.2Ω pod versus a 0.2Ω sub-ohm coil.

The options at ADVapes: matching ohms to wattage

Most modern pods are “smart” and set their own power, but on any wattage device you should run each coil inside its printed range. Every coil at ADVapes lists its recommended wattage — here is the general picture across our Coils, Pods & Spares range:

  • 1.0Ω–1.2Ω MTL pods (e.g. Vaporesso XROS 1.2Ω, Uwell Caliburn) — roughly 10–15W. Tight draw, 20–50mg salts, most economical on juice.
  • 0.6Ω–0.8Ω all-rounders (e.g. VOOPOO PNP 0.6Ω, XROS 0.8Ω) — roughly 15–25W. Restricted draw, moderate vapour, 10–20mg juice.
  • 0.15Ω–0.3Ω sub-ohm coils (e.g. VOOPOO PNP X 0.15Ω) — roughly 40–80W. Airy DTL, big clouds, 3–6mg freebase or low-strength salts.

The golden rule: start at the low end of the printed wattage range on a fresh, primed coil and step up until the flavour and vapour are where you like them. Firing a sub-ohm coil below its range makes weak, cool vapour; firing a high-Ω coil above its range burns the wick.

How to choose the right resistance

  1. Decide your draw first. Want a tight, cigarette-style pull? Go high-Ω MTL. Want big airy clouds? Go sub-ohm DTL. Somewhere between? Pick a 0.6Ω–0.8Ω coil.
  2. Match your nicotine to the coil. High-Ω coils suit 20–50mg salts; sub-ohm coils suit 3–6mg juice, because a low-Ω coil delivers far more nicotine per puff.
  3. Check the coil fits your device. A coil’s ideal wattage is useless if the pod cannot deliver it. Match the coil range to your device’s output.
  4. Run it in range. Stay inside the printed wattage window and your coil lasts longer and tastes cleaner.

FAQ

Does a lower-ohm coil use more e-liquid and battery?

Yes. Lower resistance means more power and heat, so sub-ohm coils vaporise liquid faster and drain the battery quicker than high-Ω MTL coils.

What wattage should I run my coil at?

Use the range printed on the coil or its packaging. Start at the bottom of that range and increase gradually until flavour and vapour feel right.

Can I put any resistance coil in my pod?

Only coils designed for your device. Fitting a sub-ohm coil in a small MTL pod that cannot supply the power will give a poor, cool vape and may flood.
