Vape Coils Explained in South Africa: Ohms, Mesh & When to Replace
The coil is the small heating element that turns your e-liquid into vapour, and it has more influence over flavour, vapour and battery life than almost any other part of your setup. If your vape suddenly tastes muted, harsh or burnt, the coil is usually the culprit. This guide explains vape coils in plain terms for South African vapers — what the ohm rating means, why mesh coils have taken over, how resistance changes the draw, and the clear signs that it is time to fit a fresh one.
Nicotine products are for adult smokers and vapers aged 18+ only.
About vape coils, ohms and mesh
A coil is a length of resistance wire wrapped around (or printed onto) a cotton wick. When you press the fire button or draw on a pod, the battery pushes current through that wire, it heats up, and the e-liquid soaked into the wick vaporises. Coils are consumables — the wire and wick degrade with use and need replacing periodically.
The number you see written on a coil — such as 0.8ohm or 1.2ohm — is its electrical resistance, measured in ohms (Ω). It is the single most important spec to understand:
- Higher resistance (roughly 0.8ohm to 1.5ohm+) runs cooler, sips less power and produces a tighter, cigarette-like mouth-to-lung (MTL) draw. These pair with higher-nicotine salts and are ideal for pod kits and anyone switching from smoking.
- Lower resistance (roughly 0.15ohm to 0.6ohm) — often called sub-ohm — heats more wire, uses more power and produces big, warm, direct-to-lung (DTL) clouds. These suit lower-nicotine freebase e-liquids and larger devices.
Mesh is the other term you will see everywhere. Instead of a round coil of wire, a mesh coil is a thin perforated strip. That strip has far more surface area touching the wick, which means it heats more evenly, brings out flavour more cleanly and tends to last longer than old-style round coils. Most modern pods and tanks now use mesh for exactly these reasons.
Coils, pods and mesh at ADVapes
Because most current devices are pod-based, the “coil” is often built into a replacement pod rather than sold as a bare coil. At ADVapes you will find both formats in stock:
- Replacement pods with built-in coils — such as the Bolt Click and Airscream M.USE pods — where you simply swap the whole pod when performance drops.
- Bare replacement coils for tank-based and refillable systems, sold in multi-packs by resistance.
- Batteries, chargers and spares that keep the rest of your setup running.

How to choose the right coil (and make it last)
- Match the pod or coil to your exact device. Coils are not universal. Check your device name and buy the pod or coil listed for it.
- Pick resistance by draw style. Want a tight, smoky MTL puff on nic salts? Choose higher-ohm coils. Want big airy DTL clouds on freebase? Choose sub-ohm mesh.
- Prime a new coil. Drip a few drops of e-liquid directly onto the wick openings, fit it, fill the pod and let it stand for 5–10 minutes before vaping. This soaks the cotton and prevents a burnt first hit.
- Start at lower power. On adjustable devices, begin near the low end of the coil’s wattage range and build up. Firing a coil too hard cooks the wick.
- Keep it topped up. Vaping a near-empty pod is the fastest way to scorch a coil. Refill before it runs dry.

FAQ
How do I know when to replace my coil?
The clearest signs are a burnt or muted taste, reduced vapour, a gurgling or leaking pod, or e-liquid that darkens quickly. Most coils and pods last roughly one to two weeks with regular use, but sweeter, darker e-liquids gunk them up faster. If flavour has dropped off, replace it. Our guide on why your vape tastes burnt covers this in depth.
Does a lower ohm mean more nicotine?
No. Ohms measure resistance, not nicotine. However, lower-ohm sub-ohm coils produce more vapour, so they are usually paired with lower-nicotine e-liquid, while higher-ohm coils are paired with stronger nic salts to keep the total nicotine comfortable.
Are mesh coils better than standard coils?
For most vapers, yes. Mesh generally gives cleaner flavour, smoother vapour and a slightly longer lifespan because it heats the wick more evenly. It is the reason nearly all new pods use mesh coils.
