How to Prime a New Vape Coil in South Africa: Avoid Dry Hits

Fitted a fresh coil or pod and the first puff tastes harsh, dry or burnt? Nine times out of ten the coil simply was not primed. Priming means letting the cotton inside a new coil soak up e-liquid before you fire it, so the wick is wet when the metal heats up. Skip it and you scorch dry cotton on the very first draw, which ruins the coil and the flavour in seconds. This ADVapes guide walks South African vapers through priming a new coil or pod the right way, step by step, so you get clean flavour from puff one.

Nicotine products are for adult smokers and vapers aged 18+ only.

What “priming” a coil actually means

Inside every coil is a wire wrapped around, or pressed into, an organic cotton wick. When you vape, the wick draws e-liquid to the wire, the wire heats it, and you inhale the vapour. Fresh from the packet, that cotton is bone dry. If you fire a dry coil, the wire hits cotton with no liquid to turn into vapour, the cotton chars, and you get that unmistakable burnt, acrid taste that no amount of new juice will fix. Priming soaks the wick first so there is always liquid between the heat and the cotton. It takes about two minutes of patience and saves you the price of a replacement coil.

The options at ADVapes

Priming works the same way whether you run a refillable pod with a built-in coil, a pod that takes replaceable coils, or a sub-ohm tank. At ADVapes you will find genuine coils and pods for the most popular South African devices, all in our Coils, Pods & Spares range. A few common types:

  • Refillable pods with mesh coils — such as Vaporesso XROS and Uwell Caliburn pods. You fill the pod, then prime through the fill port and coil holes.
  • Replaceable pod coils — like VOOPOO PNP coils, which drop into a pod or tank. Prime by wetting the exposed cotton ports before fitting.
  • Sub-ohm tank coils — larger DTL coils with bigger wicking holes that need a little more liquid and a longer soak.

Higher-resistance MTL coils (1.0Ω and up) wick slowly and pair with 20–50mg nic salts; lower-resistance DTL coils (below 0.6Ω) drink liquid faster and suit lower-strength juice. Both still need priming — the only difference is how long you wait.

How to prime a new coil: step by step

  1. Drip a few drops directly onto the cotton. Look for the wicking ports — the little holes on the side (or the exposed cotton) of the coil. Drip two to five drops of e-liquid straight into each port until the cotton looks dark and wet. Do not flood it.
  2. Fill the pod or tank. Add your e-liquid as normal and seat the coil or pod firmly so it seals.
  3. Wait for the wick to soak. Let it stand for two to five minutes. Higher-Ω MTL coils and bigger tank coils need the longer end of that range so the cotton is fully saturated.
  4. Take a few primer puffs. With the device switched off, draw through the mouthpiece a few times without firing. This pulls liquid deeper into the wick.
  5. Start low and build up. On a wattage device, begin below the coil’s recommended range and step up over your first few puffs. On a fixed-output pod, just take gentle draws to start. This eases the coil in rather than shocking dry spots.

If it still tastes a touch dry, wait another minute — the cotton is not fully wet yet. Never chain-fire a brand-new coil at full power; that is the fastest way to a burnt hit.

FAQ

How long should I wait after priming before vaping?

Give it two to five minutes after filling. Thicker high-VG juice and larger DTL coils need the longer wait; thin nic-salt liquid in a small MTL pod wicks quicker.

Can I over-prime a coil?

You can over-drip and flood it, which causes gurgling and leaking rather than a burnt taste. If it gurgles, tip out the excess, tap the pod gently on a tissue and take a couple of dry draws to clear it.

My pod has a built-in coil — do I still prime it?

Yes. Fill it, let it stand a few minutes so the liquid reaches the internal wick, and take a few no-fire draws before your first proper puff.
