Additives and shots are the components for finishing a longfill or shortfill e-liquid at home: nicotine shots, vegetable glycerine (VG) and, in this category, the longfill flavour concentrates themselves. If you buy a flavour shot, this is where the other half of the bottle comes from.
Nic shots come in two types, and they are not interchangeable. A freebase nic shot (typically 24mg, 36mg, 60mg or 72mg in 10ml) is designed for 120ml direct-lung shortfills and brings the finished bottle to 2mg to 6mg. A nic salt shot (20mg to 50mg in 15ml) is designed for 30ml and 60ml MTL longfills and brings the bottle to somewhere between 12mg and 50mg. Using a salt shot in a DL shortfill will give you a liquid far too strong for a sub-ohm coil.
The label tells you the final strength. Shots from SSL, NLI (New Lab Industries) and Bewolk Smart are named for what they make: “24mg 10ml makes 2mg 120ml” means one shot added to a 120ml shortfill with 10ml of headroom gives a 2mg finished liquid. Two of the same shot in a bottle with 20ml headroom gives 4mg. Work from the label rather than guessing.
VG is the filler, not a flavour. An 80ml bottle of vegetable glycerine at R39 tops up a longfill after the shot goes in. It is thick, sweet and neutral; a 30ml longfill usually needs about 10ml to 15ml of VG plus one 15ml shot. PG (propylene glycol) is thinner and carries flavour more sharply, but most longfills are formulated for a VG top-up. Check the flavour shot’s instructions.
Pricing. Shots and VG are cheap consumables, R39 to R80 a bottle. Flavour shots run R160 to R200 for a 30ml or 120ml concentrate. The saving over pre-mixed liquid comes from mixing several bottles over time, not from a single purchase.
Wear gloves when handling concentrated nicotine, keep bottles sealed and out of reach of children and pets, and label anything you mix.
