DTL / DL E-Liquids in South Africa: Buyer’s Guide
DTL e-liquids (direct-to-lung, also called DL liquids) are the big-cloud side of vaping: high-VG juice at low freebase strengths, made for airy coils that you inhale straight into the lungs. In South Africa this almost always means 120ml bottles at 2mg or 3mg — a completely different animal from the small, strong bottles covered in our nic salts & MTL liquids pillar. This guide explains what makes a liquid DL, which strength to pick, and which in-stock bottles in the DL Liquids range are worth your money.
What makes an e-liquid “DL”?
Three things separate DL liquid from everything else on the shelf:
- High VG ratio (usually 70/30 VG/PG or thicker) — thick liquid that wicks properly through large sub-ohm coils and produces dense vapour.
- Low freebase nicotine — 0mg to 3mg, occasionally 5mg. Because a DL inhale moves far more vapour per puff, low strength still satisfies; anything stronger becomes harsh fast.
- Big bottles — 120ml is the SA standard, because sub-ohm coils drink liquid three to five times faster than pod coils.
If your device is a small pod with a tight draw, stop here: you want nic salts, not DL liquid. Thick 70/30 juice will not wick through a 1.0-ohm pod coil and will burn it.
The hardware side: what DL liquids need
DL juice only performs on sub-ohm hardware — a tank or pod-mod running a coil below 1.0 ohm at roughly 40W and up, with the airflow opened. If you’re still choosing a device, our DL hardware buyer’s guide walks through the tanks, mods and coils that pair with every bottle below. As a rule of thumb: mesh coils around 0.15–0.4 ohm give the best flavour from 120ml freebase liquids.

Choosing strength and flavour
2mg or 3mg? Most ex-smokers who vape DL all day settle at 2mg; 3mg suits lighter or occasional vapers who want a touch more per puff. If you find yourself chain-vaping a 2mg, move up rather than vaping more. Flavour-wise, iced fruits (watermelon, mango, grape) dominate SA’s DL market because sweetness at high wattage can fatigue the palate — the cooling keeps it fresh through a 120ml. If you’d rather mix your own DL juice for less, the flavour-shot route in our DIY e-liquid hub gets a 120ml to about half the ready-mixed price.
DTL / DL e-liquids FAQ
Can I use DL liquid in a pod system?
Only in a pod-mod running a sub-ohm coil. In a standard MTL pod, high-VG liquid wicks too slowly and burns the coil — use nic salts there instead.
Why are DL liquids only 2mg–3mg?
A direct-lung inhale delivers several times more vapour per puff than an MTL draw, so nicotine intake per puff is comparable to a much stronger MTL liquid. Higher freebase strengths become harsh and unpleasant at sub-ohm wattages.
How long does a 120ml last?
A moderate sub-ohm vaper gets through roughly 10ml–15ml a day, so a 120ml typically lasts a week to ten days — which is why the format is standard for DL.
What’s the difference between DL and MTL liquid?
DL is high-VG, low-strength freebase for airy lung hits; MTL is thinner, higher-strength (often salt) liquid for tight cigarette-style draws. The two are not interchangeable across devices.
